How We Helped a Client from Düsseldorf Finalize a Cross-Border Divorce in Russia

Our client, Nikolas from Düsseldorf, Germany, lived in Russia from 2010 to 2022, working for the local branch of Siemens. In 2017, he married Elizaveta. The couple had no children.

In 2022, Nikolas returned to Germany. For the next two years, he hoped his wife would join him, but she refused. In 2024, he turned to GK Legal for assistance in dissolving the marriage.

As a first step, we helped restore a lost marriage certificate — the original was held by the spouse, who opposed the divorce. We then prepared and filed a petition with the magistrates’ court at her place of residence.

The court proceedings lasted two months and included an initial hearing, which was postponed for one month to allow for reconciliation, and a final session. One month after the ruling, the decision entered into legal force.

Our team obtained certified copies of the judgment and the divorce certificate, arranged for apostille certification, and translated the documents into German. All materials were sent to Germany by express mail.

The divorce was duly recognized by all competent authorities in Germany.

My case involved a custody dispute with my child's grandmother and was extremely sensitive. I am very grateful for the respectful approach and prompt response. The matter was resolved peacefully. ❤️

A very kind and patient team. I had an emotionally tough period, and they were always supportive. Not inexpensive, but worth every ruble.

Good lawyers, very clear and honest. I didn’t even have to fly to Russia, they did everything by power of attorney. Great communication on WhatsApp, always replied fast.

My divorce in Russia was a nightmare until I found this team. They really cared – not just about the case, but about me as a person. Everything was explained in simple words, and finally I could sleep normally again. Thank you from my heart.

    Questions and answers

Do I need to be physically present in Russia to get divorced?

No, personal presence is not required. We can represent you fully by power of attorney — including filing the claim and appearing in court on your behalf.

What if my spouse is outside Russia?

We specialize in international divorce cases where one party lives abroad. Our services include official notifications, court filings, court filings, and fully remote representation.

Are Russian court decisions recognized abroad?

Yes, though recognition typically requires legalization or apostille procedures. We’ll guide you in preparing documents compliant with the receiving country’s laws

How long does it take to get divorced in Russia?

Average duration: 1 to 3 months. Contested divorces or cases involving children may take longer. Where legally possible, we seek opportunities to expedite the process.

How is foreign property divided during divorce?

Russian courts can rule on property division even if some assets are located abroad. We coordinate with foreign counsel and apply relevant local property laws to protect your interests.

Can I get custody of my child if I live outside Russia?

If demonstrably in the child’s best interest, Russian courts award custody to a parent living abroad. We present evidence, arrange expert opinions, and handle cross-border legal strategy to support your position.

How can I return my internationally abducted child home from Russia?

You will need to file a lawsuit to the Russian court and provide evidence of the permanency of the previous child’s residence abroad. Normally it will take 3–4 months.

Is my prenuptial agreement valid in Russia?

Only if it meets Russian legal standards. We review and adapt your agreement to ensure it’s enforceable under Russian law.
